SUMMARY:Speaker Series with Jeff Jackson
DESCRIPTION:Join Jeff Jackson on an up close and personal tour of the Francis Marion’s botanical bounty\, both flora and otherwise. We will explore several habitats\, but primarily we will look at the incredible diversity that the pine woods offer. We will also tie in some of the rich history of the area and focus in on some of the amazing plants that make this forest so special.\nJeff Jackson grew up in upper Berkeley County\, his front yard being Lake Moultrie and his back The Forest. Since receiving a BS in Ornamental Horticulture from Clemson in 1981 he has worked as a professional landscape designer. His interest in native plants led to 30 plus years as an environmental consultant. His other love is custom hardscaping. These days you can find him either creating garden items or leading plant walks as The Hell Hole Naturalist.

SUMMARY:Putting the Garden to Bed: Supporting Pollinators
DESCRIPTION:Learn the secrets of pruning and trimming your garden in the autumn to support pollinators and biodiversity for the coming seasons. \nAs the growing season winds down\, how we tend our gardens in the fall shapes what thrives there next year. Join us for this hands-on lecture of the How Does Your Garden Grow? series\, focused on preparing your garden for winter in a way that supports pollinators and biodiversity for seasons to come. \nWe’ll cover when and how to cut back and prune thoughtfully\, leaving seed heads\, hollow stems\, and leaf litter in place where they matter most\, so overwintering insects and beneficial pollinators have the habitat they need. You’ll leave with a practical framework for fall garden cleanup that works with nature’s cycles rather than against them\, plus techniques you can apply right away in your own garden. \nWhether you’re new to pollinator-friendly gardening or looking to refine your seasonal routine\, this session offers guidance you can put into practice this fall.

SUMMARY:Planting Art for Other Species: A Conversation with Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg and Giovanni Aloi
DESCRIPTION:Join this free online conversation with artist Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg and author Giovanni Aloi about imagining art with other living worlds. \nWhat would art look like if its primary audience were not human? In this Plant Initiative conversation\, artist Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg joins art historian\, author\, and Plant Initiative board member Giovanni Aloi to explore how art can cultivate attention toward the sensory worlds\, needs\, and agency of other species. \nGinsberg will discuss Pollinator Pathmaker\, her ongoing series of algorithmically generated planting schemes\, designed from the perspective of pollinating insects. Planted and cared for by humans\, these living artworks reorder ideas of beauty\, authorship\, and spectatorship while responding to the ecological pressures facing bees\, moths\, butterflies\, beetles\, and other pollinators. The conversation will also introduce The Length of a Moment\, Ginsberg’s new public sculpture in Oxford. Comprising three bronze forms inspired by a moth’s flight through turbulent plumes of floral scent\, the work gives enduring shape to an encounter that ordinarily remains fleeting and beyond human perception. \nTogether\, Ginsberg and Aloi will consider how technology can help us imagine multispecies experience without claiming to possess it; how gardens and sculptures might become instruments of ecological empathy; and whether art can serve nonhuman life while challenging human viewers. Their exchange asks what changes when artistic practice begins not with representation\, but with responsibility to other living worlds. \nThere will be time for questions from the audience following the discussion. This free program will be livestreamed with a link to be sent to participants before the event and will also be recorded and available for viewing online afterwards.

SUMMARY:Botany Brown Bag with Dr. Rachel Shahan
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, October 29 from 12-1 pm at La Kretz Garden Pavilion for another installment of Botany Brown Bag. Dr. Rachel Shahan will give a talk titled “Getting to the Root of Plant Development.” \nPlants have an amazing ability to produce new organs throughout their lifetimes\, including flowers above the ground and roots below. Dr. Rachel Shahan will discuss how she studies post-embryonic development by applying single-cell genomics and time-lapse microscopy approaches to a simple plant model\, the root of Arabidopsis thaliana. \nMake sure to bring your lunch! \nThis event is free and open to the public\, no RSVP required.

SUMMARY:Corn as a partner and gift giver: Voices of respect
DESCRIPTION:This free online mini-conference features 10+ inspiring speakers sharing about why corn is a special being and is deserving of respect \nCorn (Zea mays\, also known as maize) is a plant of great importance in many cultures and economies worldwide. However\, corn is special for many reasons besides this plant’s well-known productivity and corn’s widespread use for human and animal food as well as for energy and industrial uses. Corn was first developed by the Indigenous peoples of Mexico thousands of years ago and has a long and important history of strong connection with the peoples of the Americas who consider corn as an ancestor\, teacher\, partner\, giftgiver\, and spiritual being. Corn has become important for many people in non-Indigenous cultures as well. However\, typically\, corn is often used in the dominant culture just for human purposes without the sense of respect\, reciprocity\, and appropriate use with which corn was originally developed\, and without appreciating the unique being that corn is. \nThe goal of this free online mini-conference is to encourage all groups of people to consider corn as a being deserving of more respect. The event features a diverse group of inspiring speakers who will speak on behalf of corn and why this plant being is important as well as how they feel that corn should be treated. They each bring their own perspective about this plant\, but what they have in common is a sense of appreciation and care for corn which they will share with you in this unique event. \nThe presenters are: Mary Anne Quiroz\, Executive Director\, Indigenous Roots; Gustavo Romero\, Chef/owner Oro by Nixta y Nixta Tortilleria; Zachary Paige\, Farmer & Sustainable Ag & Food Systems Coordinator – NW RSDP; Hope Flanagan\, Community Outreach and Cultural Teacher\, Dream of Wild Health; David Abazs\, Farmer\, Round River Farm & Exec Dir\, NE RSDP – UMN Extension; Milford Calamity\, Diné (Navajo) Jeweler; Robin Wall Kimmerer\, Author\, Scientist\, and Professor; Frank Kutka\, Adjunct Lecturer\, College of Menominee Nation; Walter Goldstein\, Executive Director\, Mandaamin Institute; LoriAnn Bird\, Author\, Herbalist\, and Educator; and Rebecca Krinke\, Professor of Landscape Architecture\, UMN. The panel moderators are: Dr. Kate Brelje\, St. Bonaventure University; Dr. Dan Philippon\, University of Minnesota; and Dr. Nick Jordan. \nEach of the three speakers in the panel will give 12 minute presentations\, followed by 15 minutes of questions and answers from the audience directed at any or all of the panelists. So each panel will run for about an hour\, with the program lasting three hours. This live event will also be recorded and will be available for free viewing online afterwards on The Plant Initiative’s YouTube channel. \nA Zoom link to the live program will be sent to participants before the event. Audience members are welcome to participate in any portion(s) of the program that they would like\, and to watch the recording later for anything that they might have missed\, which they would like to watch again\, or to share with others.
