SUMMARY:Planting Art for Other Species: A Conversation with Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg and Giovanni Aloi
DESCRIPTION:Join this free online conversation with artist Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg and author Giovanni Aloi about imagining art with other living worlds. \nWhat would art look like if its primary audience were not human? In this Plant Initiative conversation\, artist Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg joins art historian\, author\, and Plant Initiative board member Giovanni Aloi to explore how art can cultivate attention toward the sensory worlds\, needs\, and agency of other species. \nGinsberg will discuss Pollinator Pathmaker\, her ongoing series of algorithmically generated planting schemes\, designed from the perspective of pollinating insects. Planted and cared for by humans\, these living artworks reorder ideas of beauty\, authorship\, and spectatorship while responding to the ecological pressures facing bees\, moths\, butterflies\, beetles\, and other pollinators. The conversation will also introduce The Length of a Moment\, Ginsberg’s new public sculpture in Oxford. Comprising three bronze forms inspired by a moth’s flight through turbulent plumes of floral scent\, the work gives enduring shape to an encounter that ordinarily remains fleeting and beyond human perception. \nTogether\, Ginsberg and Aloi will consider how technology can help us imagine multispecies experience without claiming to possess it; how gardens and sculptures might become instruments of ecological empathy; and whether art can serve nonhuman life while challenging human viewers. Their exchange asks what changes when artistic practice begins not with representation\, but with responsibility to other living worlds. \nThere will be time for questions from the audience following the discussion. This free program will be livestreamed with a link to be sent to participants before the event and will also be recorded and available for viewing online afterwards.
