The African Origins Garden highlights the botanical diaspora by featuring plants commonly found throughout Southern landscapes that trace their origins to regions across Africa\, symbolizing how plant migration parallels the historical displacement and movement of people. Complementing this\, the Lowcountry Garden is rooted in the ecology of local marshlands\, incorporating native reeds\, a circular arrangement of concrete benches inspired by the contours of coastal mudflats\, and a gentle ground depression that gathers site runoff. Together\, these spaces form a contemplative memorial landscape that honors ancestral memory and offers visitors a profound connection to the enduring heritage of the African diaspora. \nHood Design Studio is a landscape architecture and social art practice based in Oakland\, California and founded by visionary landscape architect\, Walter Hood. Paul Peters\, a Principal at Hood Design Studio\, is renowned for spotlighting the intricate ties between nature and culture in his landscape designs. He transforms expansive sites into intimate spaces\, designing with sensitivity to personal memories and experiences. He is deeply invested in the conceptual phase\, seamlessly weaving broad perspectives\, conceptual thinking\, and research throughout his projects\, ultimately influencing societal perspectives. Earning his master’s in landscape architecture from the University of British Columbia\, Paul managed his own design-build firm in Vancouver for seven years. DESCRIPTION:Join Scott Burdick\, board chair of Desert Botanical Garden\, for a private tour of his famed Rancho Arroyo garden! Dating to the 1920s\, this acre property was originally owned by Hubert Earle\, director of the Desert Botanical Garden. Earle filled the grounds with rare specimens brought back from Mexico\, including boojum trees\, unusual cacti\, and striking desert flora. Successive owner Virginia Cave sculpted the landscape to echo natural desert wash with native plantings\, including palo brea and several different species of cacti. Further delights include heritage ironwood\, saguaro\, and totem pole cacti\, as well as a fountain-fed\, circulating stream that attracts wildlife and nourishes the flowers and grasses. \nScott Burdick is the board chair of Desert Botanical Garden and managing partner at Wiseman and Gale\, an interior design firm based in Scottsdale\, AZ. Burdick previously worked in Treasury and Finance at Saks Fifth Avenue’s corporate headquarters\, then at global management consulting firm Mercer Management Consulting – a division of Marsh & McLennan Companies\, in a senior financial role for their European businesses. DESCRIPTION:Blackland Collaborative is an ecology-based consulting group with over 40 years of collective experience in restoring\, creating\, and conserving functional ecosystems. This program will discuss some of the Collaborative’s Texas-based landscape projects\, such as the Headwaters at the Comal and the George W. Bush Presidential Center\, to examine ecological design for native grasslands\, riparian restoration\, urban ecology\, native prairie green roofs\, landscape restoration plans at multiple scales\, and pocket prairies. \nJohn Hart Asher has over sixteen years of experience designing and building functional ecosystems within urban conditions. He has conducted basic research in ecological engineering\, ecological restoration\, and land management\, offered workshops to professionals and the public\, and provided fee-supported ecological consulting expertise to clients across Texas. As part of the consulting team\, John Hart works with integrated design teams composed of engineers\, architects\, landscape architects\, and developers to integrate sustainable design\, practices\, and philosophies into projects. He specializes in translating sustainable design into successful projects that provide varying layers of ecosystem services. Our Winter Garden gardens tour will begin at the Path of Life\, a small\, lush public garden created to enhance the beauty of Chapin Station Park while protecting the natural environment. Katy Moss Warner\, president emerita of the American Horticultural Society and president of the Bloom & Grow Garden Society\, will walk you through this peaceful place and share about the evolution of this special space on the West Orange Trail. The tour will continue to a fascinating private garden on Lake Apopka. Created by former nursery owners\, this beautiful garden is replete with palms\, epiphytes\, a collection of Tillandsia\, and lots of pollinator plants. Next\, the group will visit City Hall to learn about the Winter Garden Heritage Tree Project and view plans for the new 24-acre Health and Wellness Park under construction. The tour will end at the unique Live Trends retail plant shop near City Hall. You will want to extend your stay in Winter Garden to enjoy the shops and restaurants along Plant Street! \nKaty Moss Warner is president emerita of the American Horticultural Society and president of the Bloom & Grow Garden Society. She is also a board advisor for America in Bloom\, an organization that promotes nationwide beautification with an emphasis on volunteer community involvement. Warner trained in landscape architecture at the University of Arizona and was a Longwood Fellow in public garden administration at the University of Delaware/Longwood Gardens. For 24 years\, Warner worked as a professional horticulturist at Walt Disney World in Florida managing the landscapes of theme parks\, resort properties and roads on the 30\,000-acre property\, retiring as director of horticulture and environmental initiatives. She was awarded the Loeb Fellowship of the Harvard Graduate School of Design in Cambridge\, MA in 2000. This program will address soil and water\, soil texture and structure\, soil chemistry\, nutrient delivery\, and the soil ecosystem. \nGretchen Renshaw is a horticulturist and teacher. She is a founder and volunteer director at the Manhattan Beach Botanical Garden in California. This demonstration garden features California native plants and sustainable gardening practices. She is a former horticulture instructor at UCLA Extension\, where she taught for over 25 years. One of her courses was a four-unit class on Soils and Plant Nutrition\, for which she wrote and published Underground: A Gardener’s Guide to Soil and Plant Nutrition. Renshaw also worked as a science teacher at an elementary school\, engaging students in hands-on science activities from kindergarten to fifth grade. DESCRIPTION:When Paula Whyman first climbed a peak in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in search of a home in the country\, she had no idea how quickly her tidy backyard ecology project would become a massive endeavor. She soon discovered just how much she had to learn about hands-on conservation work. Bad Naturalist is a memoir about Paula Whyman’s attempts to restore native meadows on a 200-acre mountaintop–about the obstacles she encountered\, the mistakes she made\, the failures and the all-important successes\, and the discoveries she made along the way. Douglas Tallamy calls Bad Naturalist “self-deprecating\, humorous\, and thoroughly engaging.” Washington Gardener calls it “glorious.” Whyman will share the story of her efforts to restore the land. \nBad Naturalist is Paula Whyman’s first book of nonfiction. Her earlier book\, You May See a Stranger\, is an award-winning linked short story collection. Her writing has appeared in The Washington Post and The American Scholar\, and in journals including McSweeney’s Quarterly\, Virginia Quarterly Review\, Ploughshares\, and The Hudson Review. She was awarded residencies by MacDowell\, Yaddo\, VCCA\, The Studios of Key West\, and Oak Spring Garden Foundation. Her work on this book was supported in part by the Maryland State Arts Council. SUMMARY:AHS LIVE: Indigenous Landscapes of Abundance
DESCRIPTION:This program will explore the historic land management practices of Indigenous women of the northern Great Plains\, with a focus on the Amskapi Piikani (or Blackfeet) women. Dr. LaPier will address the ways Indigenous women promoted the growth of prairie plants\, including domesticated food-plants\, cultivated food-plants and “wild” food-plants within the northern Great Plains. You will also learn about some of the ancient “lost crops\,” those food-plants that were cultivated in the distant past and are no longer in use. This program strives to engender conversation around Indigenous women’s role in creating sustainable landscapes of abundance. \nDr. Rosalyn LaPier is an award-winning Indigenous writer\, environmental historian\, and traditionally trained ethnobotanist who currently serves as a professor at University of Illinois and a research associate at the Smithsonian. They research and write about Indigenous landscape management practices\, traditional ecological knowledge (TEK)\, and Native American relationships with the natural world. They are the author of two books\, including Invisible Reality: Storytellers\, Storytakers and the Supernatural World of the Blackfeet. They have also produced two Blackfeet language lexicons and written dozens of articles and commentaries. SUMMARY:AHS LIVE: Behind-The-Scenes Tour: Manhattan Beach Gardens
DESCRIPTION:The tour will begin at the Manhattan Beach Botanical Garden\, a demonstration garden and certified nature habitat located in Polliwog Park. Garden director Gretchen Renshaw will share the season’s most stunning collections\, emphasizing the garden’s work on earth-friendly gardening techniques such as water conservation for the home landscape\, installation and care for California native plants\, and creating wildlife habitat. The tour will continue to private Manhattan Beach gardens to delight in designs highlighting native plants\, habitats for pollinators and birds\, and canopies of acacias that create the feeling of a secluded woodland. \nGretchen Renshaw is a horticulturist and teacher. She is a founder and volunteer director at the Manhattan Beach Botanical Garden in California. This demonstration garden features California native plants and sustainable gardening practices. She is a former horticulture instructor at UCLA Extension\, where she taught for over 25 years. One of her courses was a four-unit class on Soils and Plant Nutrition. Difficulty finding a suitable textbook for the course\, lead her and her writing partner to write and publish: “Underground: A Gardener’s Guide to Soil and Plant Nutrition.” Prior to retirement\, Gretchen worked as a science teacher at an elementary school\, engaging students in hands-on science activities from kindergarten to fifth grade. It summons memories\, provides comfort\, and often takes gardeners and garden visitors to exotic parts of the world. In this session\, Christopher Sheridan will explore the language of fragrance\, share design strategies for scented plants\, review a classic classification system\, and journey through the scented bloom cycle. Get in the spirit and bring a new level of creativity and enjoyment to gardening\, flower arranging\, and garden touring. \nChristopher Barrett Sheridan\, The Flower Sommelier\, is a horticulturalist\, floral design instructor\, and aspiring historian\, specializing in scented plants\, heirloom flowers\, romantic garden design\, and Victorian floral traditions. Chris regularly offers immersive design workshops at Longwood Gardens and lectures at national events\, including the Philadelphia Flower Show and the International Master Gardener Conference. DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, Dr. Lopez will focus on the history of botany in Mexico (including the southwestern United States that were previously part of Mexico)\, drawing from his new book\, Rooted in Place: Botany\, Indigeneity\, and Art in the Construction of Mexican Nature\, 1570-1914. Rooted in Place traces historical transformations in the relationship between nature and imagined communities across three interlinked moments in the Renaissance\, the Enlightenment\, and the late nineteenth century in Mexico. It is the first major study of the relationship between understandings of nature and the creation of structures of rule within Mexico. The book intentionally weaves between environmental history\, history of science\, visual culture\, and political history. \nRick A. López is Anson D. DESCRIPTION:The winter garden is a truly low maintenance affair and a time to enjoy – no weeding\, no watering and no deadheading! The winter landscape may be quiescent\, but the garden need not be bleak. Plants with brightly colored berries\, twigs\, stems\, foliage and even winter-blooming flowers shrug off the snow and cold. Landscape horticulturist Warren Leach\, author of Plants for the Winter Garden\, will showcase gardens he has designed that celebrate the winter season as well as planting design ideas for your own garden. \nWarren Leach is a passionate plant collector\, nurseryman\, horticulturist\, and landscape designer with a depth of knowledge of all garden plants including perennials\, tropical\, temperate and woody plants. For more than 35 years\, Leach has been creating landscapes throughout New England as well as making captivating and education display gardens at Tranquil Lake Nursery in Rehoboth\, MA.
