Join gardens manager Sarah Baker and horticulturist Riz Reyes, the former gardens manager, for an extensive garden tour of the former Anderson School in Bothell, WA. The five-acre site, now a multi-use venue, features a Pacific Northwest desert garden, bold and lush plantings outside and inside the neighborhood pool, extensive mixed borders with unique trees and shrubs with blooming perennials, a wildflower meadow, and a kitchen garden. This private garden is owned and operated by McMenamins, a Portland, OR-based hospitality company known for transforming old, historic buildings and properties into multi-use venues that value an eclectic and adventurous approach towards gardens. After touring the gardens, the group will also have an opportunity for a tasting at the on-site brewery.
Riz Reyes currently serves as the Assistant Director of Heronswood Garden in Kingston, WA. He began his independent venture, RHR Horticulture & Landwave Gardens, as a specialty hobby nursery propagating rare and unique plant selections and offering fine gardening/design services. Now, his work focuses on garden education/consulting and floral design. Riz published a children’s non-fiction book released in March 2022 titled Grow: A family guide to plants and how to grow them.
Reyes immersed himself in the remarkable diversity of plants that thrives in the maritime climate of the Pacific Northwest shortly after immigrating from his native Philippines. He sought out every opportunity to learn everything he could about the field of horticulture and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Horticulture and Urban Forestry from the University of Washington in Seattle, WA.
