The Art of Nature: Botanical Art Classes at River Farm

A new series of art classes is coming to River Farm! The Art of Nature, taught by multidisciplinary artist and Master Gardener Mary Jennings, is a six-class series running from March through November. Through guided observation at River Farm, classes will use botanical observation, art, and journaling as a means of creative exploration across diverse media.

Join us for individual classes or the entire series. Classes are suitable for beginners as well as more experienced artists.

Class 1 | Foundations: Contour and Observation
Saturday, March 28, 2026 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Line work, mindful seeing, sketchbook setup, and simple design (borders).

Class 2 | Watercolor Botanical Color Mixing
Wednesday, April 29, 2026 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Seasonal palettes, greens and neutrals, light/shadow, and swatch journals.

Class 3 | Leaves, Textures, and Pattern Design
Wednesday, June 8, 2026 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Ink and wash, leaf anatomy, stylized motifs, and repeat patterns.

Class 4 | Flowers and Forms
Thursday, September 24, 2026 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Plant structure, layered watercolor, negative space, and floral vignettes.

Class 5 | Composition and Decorative Arts
Thursday, October 29, 2026 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Combing elements, balanced layout, postcards and/or bookmarks.

Class 6 | Final Botanical Artwork or Journal Spread
Saturday, November 21, 2026 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Planning through final piece, notes, lettering, and finishing touches.

Materials
Students provide their own art supplies. A detailed supply list will be sent to registrants prior to each session.

  • Location: In-person at River Farm, 7931 East Boulevard Drive, Alexandria, VA 22308
  • Fee:
    • $65 per class for AHS members/$75 per class for non-members.
    • $385 for all six classes for AHS members/$400 for all six classes for non-members.
