Online Presentation hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Madison : Activity of Woody Perennials Through Winter

Al Kovalesky studies the physiological processes that determine how plants control cold hardiness and dormancy during the winter and how that leads to budbreak and flowering in spring. This knowledge can then be used to inform models predicting phenology to understand how plants can survive in different environments or future climates. His work explores the question: Can we predict adaptation of a plant to an environment based on winter responses? Held by the University of Wisconsin – Madison.

Herbal Soap Making Class at Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden (Des Moines, IA)

Explore the art and science of making handcrafted soap from scratch with Ann Staudt of Siberian Soap Co. at the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden! Using the centuries-old cold process soap-making technique, students will combine plant-based oils and lye to create soaps that are mild, moisturizing, and eco-friendly. This workshop is very hands-on, with each participant making and taking home one pound of their own custom batch of herbal handcrafted soap. All participants require long sleeves, long pants, and closed-toe shoes. Please bring an old towel or blanket to insulate your finished soap.
Open to age 16+; younger students must have advance permission from the instructor.

Habitat Exhibit at Green Bay Botanical Garden (Green Bay, WI)

This traveling exhibit arrives at Green Bay Botanical Garden for its Wisconsin debut this spring and will feature eight different displays highlighting habitats in nature, from birds and butterflies in the air to bugs and fungi underground. The exhibit is included with daily admission to the Garden and is free for Garden members.

The Minnesota Hosta Society is delighted to be the host for the AHS 2022 convention. Our membership is excited to have you join us in fellowship and share our passion for gardening with hosta. Our theme, Hosta Vision 2022, was retained from the postponed event of 2020 due to Covid, but also represents the ever expanding use of hosta in the garden used for visual effect. Hostas continue to be America’s number one perennial due to their versatility in the landscape. Plus they thrive in Minnesota’s Zone 4 climate!
