Twilight Triliums at Garden in the Woods

Stroll the Garden after hours during Trillium Week and enjoy the largest collection of trilliums north of Delaware during their peak flowering time. Enjoy crudité and charcuterie as well as wine, craft beer, and mocktails from Decanted Wine Truck, a woman-owned, local business. ‘It woke me up,’ says Thomas Rainer, writing about Federal Twist in the Foreword to James Golden’s new book. Making his garden woke Golden up too. The site was terrible—a waste of derelict woodland, shade, and heavy, wet clay. As Golden thought his way through the constraints of the place, the emerging garden triggered new awakenings, and led him to a new way of thinking about gardens, nature and himself. In this illustrated book talk, Golden will tell us about this new way of thinking, and how it changed his life.

Suffolk County Master Gardener Spring Gardening School (hybrid)

An annual tradition for over 30 years – the Master Gardeners Spring Gardening School-, has sprouted into a three-part package, “Spring Garden Trio,” which includes virtual keynote programs and in-person workshops on three Saturdays in Spring 2022. On the first Saturday, March 19, Rick Darke, photographer, author, and horticulturist, opens Spring Garden Trio with his virtual Garden Lens lecture “Dynamic Design & the Art of Observation.” Then, the following Saturday, March 26 AwaytoGarden blogger/podcast host and New York Times Garden editor Margaret Roach discusses “Non-stop Plants: A Garden for 365 Days.” Roach will be joined by nine other horticultural experts talking about native plants and good garden practices. On Saturday, April 30, gardeners who want to get their hands busy will be participating in workshops from bonsai to beekeeping at Suffolk County Farm.

New York Botanical Garden Winter Lecture Series, Adapting to a New Climate

The New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) presents its 22nd Annual Winter Lecture Series, Adapting to a New Climate, featuring landscape architects who use proactive and intentional approaches in their design projects to address climate change and current environmental challenges. The speakers for this year’s series—which takes place on three Thursdays, January 27, February 24, and March 31, 2022—are Kate Orff, founding principal of SCAPE and MacArthur Foundation “Genius Grant” recipient; Claudia West, a leading voice in the field of ecological planting design; and James Burnett, whose 30-year career has been dedicated to revitalizing communities.
