Tropical climates produce higher levels of plant diversity than any other climate, and preserving their ecosystems is crucial to the planet’s health. Hawaiian plants are particularly rare and in need of cultivation and preservation – more than 90% of the species in Hawaii are found nowhere else on earth. This program will share highlights of Hawaii tropical plants, discussing plant groupings, landscape choices, and plant care and maintenance.
Keith Tomlinson served as Manager for Meadowlark Botanical Gardens in Virginia for 23 years. Previously, he worked as the Natural History Education Specialist in the botany department at the Bishop Museum in Honolulu. His work included extensive programming in native Hawaiian plants and interpreting the vast array of introduced tropical species across the archipelago. Tomlinson is the author of numerous articles on plant conservation, botanic garden travel, and environmental education, and he leads gardens-focused travel studies for AHS.
