Position Summary

The American Horticultural Society (AHS) is expanding our Finance team and seeks a new Finance Associate, reporting to the Director of Finance. This position will be a critical, hands-on partner to AHS membership, development and program teams. Successful candidates will possess excellent organization, communication, and relationship building skills.

Responsibilities

While there may be other job-related responsibilities and tasks, this job description is intended to identify the essential functions and requirements of the position.

  • Manage and monitor the processing of financial and accounting transactions daily;
  • Ensure timely payments to vendors using BILL; maintain positive vendor relationships;
  • Collaborate with internal departments to routinely reconcile revenue with department revenue systems;
  • Submit payroll on semi-monthly and bi-weekly cycles for PEO processing; set up new hires as needed; submit retirement plan contributions semi-monthly;
  • Prepare monthly bank reconciliations;
  • Execute timely monthly closing processes and journal entries necessary to deliver financial reports and statements for internal leadership, and facilitate transparent financial reporting;
  • Act as primary contact for financial software and tools, such as Intacct, BILL, Insperity, and TIAA;
  • Support and advise internal team in accounting policies and procedures;
  • Ensure accurate revenue and expense coding by department and funding source in BILL and Sage Intacct, including grant restrictions and spend-downs, optimizing the use of technology for restricted fund reports;
  • Monitor cash balances and support bank and investment relationships;
  • Assist with financial schedules and documentation requested for annual audit;
  • Assist with the preparation and management of annual budget in coordination with department heads and Director of Finance.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Accounting, or Finance.
  • At least two years’ experience in a finance role; public accounting and/or non-profit experience preferred.
  • Ability to communicate at various levels of financial literacy.
  • Experience with Sage Intacct preferred.
  • Experience balancing short and long-term project deadlines while remaining flexible.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, written, and verbal skills. High attention to detail.

 

Compensation

The Finance Associate is a full-time salaried position. AHS offers generous vacation, holidays, individual health, dental, vision, and 403b benefits. Salary will range from $59,000 to $67,000, commensurate with years of experience. This is an on-site position located at AHS’ River Farm headquarters near Alexandria, Virginia.
