The Santa Barbara International Orchid Show (Santa Barbara, CA)

The Santa Barbara International Orchid Show, one of the oldest, biggest, and most esteemed orchid exhibits in the country, is themed “Orchids: Gems of Nature”, taking place March 8th to 10th, 2024, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., at the Earl Warren Showgrounds in Santa Barbara, California.
All are invited to marvel at the displays in the Exhibit Pavilion, browse the Art Show, delight in the floral arrangements, learn from the potting demonstrations, and buy an orchid to take home from the Vendor Hall.

Join Leah Brooks as she explores how species which may not be suitable for a home garden provide important wildlife benefits and add beauty to the natural landscape. Nature Journaling: Winter Workshop (Hockessin, DE)

Capture a moment in time to revisit later through nature journaling. Observe and document the surroundings at Mt. Cuba with Kathy leading participants through workshop activities. Dress for the weather as a unique opportunity to experience the gardens in the winter will be included in the workshop. Select a journal that suits your tastes and bring it to class along with a #2 pencil. This program takes place in person at Mt. Cuba Center on Saturday, February 17, 2024 (Rain Date: Saturday, February 24).

Residential Landscape Design Workshop (Hockessin, DE)

Good garden design isn’t easy; but success awaits for anyone with a passion for plants, a little imagination, and proper guidance. Lee Armillei, a professional landscape designer, shows how to analyze a site, draw a basic plan, and use design principles for laying out paths, planting beds, and other garden features. Through lectures and drawing exercises, students explore design options, assess landscape materials, and employ a process that results in a practical planning document for their individual landscape project. Please bring your lunch. A detailed list of required materials is available with the online class description. This program takes place in person at Mt. Cuba Center on two Fridays: February 16 and 23 (Rain Date: Friday, March 1).

Fine Gardening Institute at Berkshire Botanical Garden (Stockbridge, MA)

This comprehensive program’s theme is How to Design, Plant, and Care for a Low-Maintenance, High-Impact, Pollinator-Friendly Flower Garden. The class will run from 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. This daylong program covers key components for designing a garden that provides maximum enjoyment (for you and pollinators) with minimal input – maintenance, pest control, water, and fertilizer. The class is ideal for those looking to create a new garden or tweak/revamp an existing one. Program led by award-winning educator, Kerry Ann Mendez.

Book Launch for “The Nature-Study Idea”

On February 5 at 6:00, a book launch, signing, and panel discussion will feature Orr and Linstrom alongside Patricia Crain, Professor of English Emerita at NYU and author of Reading Children: Literacy, Property and the Dilemmas of Childhood in Nineteenth-Century America, and Lara Saguisag, Associate Professor of Teaching and Learning and the inaugural Georgiou Chair in Children’s Literature and Literacy at NYU. The panel will be moderated by NYU Dean for the Humanities and Vice-Dean for Interdisciplinary Initiatives Una Chaudhuri. Refreshments will be served.

Plant Amnesty/Prohort Master Pruner Series for Professionals

The Master Pruner series includes 12 virtual sessions, each one covers a specific topic in pruning including rose, fruit tree, conifer, and rehabilitative pruning. The winter series will run on Thursdays, February 1 – March 7th from 9:30-11:30am and 12:30-2:30pm PST. Each virtual session is 2-hours long and costs $30.
