Train for Your Future Communications Career

If you are looking to advance your communications career, gain hands-on editorial experience with a national magazine through a paid editorial internship with The American Gardener, the official membership publication of the American Horticultural Society (AHS).

This intensive internship program is open to college-level students of journalism, English, horticulture or related fields, and to adults with relevant experience who are making a career change.

How Can We Help Your Career?

While working closely with the staff of The American Gardener magazine, interns will gain experience in all facets of the editorial and production processes for a national, four-color magazine. Primary duties include researching and writing short articles, proofreading and fact-checking, and coordinating author and photographer submissions.

As part of a broad-based exposure to gardening and horticultural communication, the editorial intern may also be asked to support the communication department’s photography needs and the organization’s social media platforms and website. Interns will have the opportunity to participate in occasional professional development workshops and field trips to prominent local gardens.

Internships are available for three- to four-month periods. Interns are paid $15 per hour and work a 40-hour week. Priority application deadlines are as follows: Summer 2024 (February 26); Fall 2024 (July 15).

Applications for the editorial internship should include the following:

  • completed application form
  • resume
  • two writing samples
  • three professional references (including names, daytime phone numbers, and person’s title or relationship to you)

Interns are responsible for making their own housing arrangements, but an information sheet that lists local shared-house rental options and apartment contacts is available upon request.
