How Can We Help Your Career?
Editorial internships with the American Horticultural Society are open to any college-level student of journalism, English, horticulture or related fields, and to adults with relevant experience who are making a career change or seeking additional training.
While working closely with the staff of The American Gardener magazine, interns will gain experience in all facets of the editorial and production processes for a national, four-color magazine. Primary duties include researching and writing short articles, proofreading and fact-checking, and coordinating author and photographer submissions.
As part of a broad-based exposure to gardening and horticultural communication, the editorial intern may also be asked to support the communication department’s photography needs and the organization’s social media platforms and website. Interns will have the opportunity to participate in occasional professional development workshops and field trips to prominent local gardens.
Internships are available for six-month periods, beginning in January and July. Interns are paid $10.00 per hour and work a 37.5-hour week. Priority application deadlines are as follows: Winter/Spring (November 1); Summer/Fall (February 1). Beyond the priority deadline, applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
Applications for the editorial internship should include the following:
- completed application form
- resume
- two writing samples
- three references (including names, daytime phone numbers, and person’s title or relationship to you)
Interns are responsible for making their own housing arrangements, but an information sheet that lists local shared-house rental options and apartment contacts is available upon request.
If you have questions about the internship, or would like to request an application packet sent as an e-mail attachment, please e-mail internships@ahsgardening.org.
