THE ICHIYO SCHOOL OF IKEBANA is a modern school which creates arrangements to suit every possible location, from Japanese-style rooms and modern spaces to large scale stages. Two important philosophies of the Ichiyo School include the concept that an arrangement must fit the environment in which it is displayed, and the individual arranger’s emotions and character are to be expressed in it. Thus it is not just flowers in a vase; it is considered to be an art of human communication, and most fulfilling when it is a reflection of oneself. This demonstration is an Introduction to Ichiyo Shiki Ikebana.

This program is offered in partnership with Ikebana International Chapter 1. Founded in 1956, Ikebana International is a non-profit cultural organization dedicated to promoting and appreciating the art of ikebana. The Washington, D.C. Chapter No.1 is proud to be the first chapter of Ikebana International outside of Tokyo, Japan. Valerie Eccleston, President of the Washington DC Chapter of the Ichiyo School and one of only three Executive Masters in the United States, will instruct this demonstration. If you are a member of Ikebana International Chapter 1, please email programs@ahsgardening.org for a special partner registration link.
