Mother’s Day Plant Sale at the Foellinger-Freimann Botanical Conservatory (Fort Wayne, IN)

The three-day plant extravaganza at the McMillen Ice Arena will once again take place over Mother’s Day weekend. The Botanical Conservatory is offering approximately 750 kinds of plants for purchase. There will be herbs, tomatoes and other vegetable plants, along with annual and perennial flowers and foliage plants, tropical plants for indoors or out, color bowls, mixed containers, and hanging baskets.

Class: Spring Vegetable Growing at the Chicago Botanic Garden (Glencoe, IL)

Start by learning about site selection and appropriate growing conditions, soil testing, cool-season crop selection and indoor seed starting. Vegetable spacing, average planting times and solid gardening techniques will be highlighted, as will succession planting and weed control.

Self-Guided Tour: Full Pink Moon Hike at Minnesota Landscape Arboretum (Chaska, MN)

Enjoy a self-guided evening hike at the Arboretum while basking in the glow of the Full Pink Moon. April’s full moon is named for the pink moss phlox that begins to bloom in April in other parts of the county – though moss phlox typically blooms in May in Minnesota. In honor of the pink moon, a 0.75 mile hiking path around Green Heron Pond will be lit with pink uplights, illuminating the surrounding landscape. The hike will start at the Sensory Garden parking lot near the Ordway Picnic Shelter, where multiple bonfires will be staged to help warm chilly fingers and toes. Arboretum Horticulturist, Annie Gunness, will be stationed near the bonfires from 7:30-9 pm to answer any questions you may have about your favorite early springtime blooms that are currently flowering in the Arboretum.

This is an informational class presented by Master Gardener, Nancy Lahmers. Learn how easy herbs are to grow. We will discuss the basics of garden design to create a visually pleasing and functional herb garden for your use. Also, we will cover some historical uses of these plants including medicine, seasoning, fragrance and display.
