Jenkins Arboretum & Gardens – Sketchbook Design Class (VIRTUAL)

MONDAYS, OCTOBER 2 – 30. Botanical Observations: Designing a Sketchbook of Autumn Subjects. 6:30 – 8:30 PM. 5-week virtual series. Margaret Saylor, Botanical Artist and Illustrator. Let’s take a closer look at some of the wonderful natural elements that make up our autumn outdoor world! Join Margaret Saylor virtually to draw (or paint) a new family of specimens each week as you create your sketchbook pages. Not only will you learn about that week’s botanical theme, but you’ll see how these subjects fit into the broader realm of contemporary botanical art. Work in graphite, Micron pen, and/or watercolor. All levels welcome; some drawing experience helpful but not necessary. A recommended materials list is available for review prior to registration.

Hershey Gardens – Bug-O-Rama (Hershey, PA)

Join us to see bugs, amphibians and reptiles from around the world and learn about their origin and behavior. Special guests include Penn State Entomology with an interactive insect zoo, Ryan the Bug Man with a variety of native and exotic insects, Pennsylvania Bat Rescue with live bats, and a live observation hive with the Planet Bee Foundation. Guests can also enjoy the Zoology Zone Interactive Cart as well as participate in worm composting and pollinator garden activities. Plus, Sarah’s Creamery will be selling ice cream treats!

Goodell Gardens & Homestead – Beauty Beyond Blooms (Edinboro, PA)

Our public programs provide an opportunity for visitors of all ages to come together to deepen their understanding of the connections between botany, horticulture, history, culture, and the natural world. In our quest for dazzling blooms, we often overlook the enchanting beauty of non-flowering plants. In these exciting sessions, we will explore the remarkable diversity of ferns, mosses, and conifers. Participants will learn how to recognize several distinctive species, and ways to incorporate their charm into the landscape. With their high tolerance for shade and low maintenance requirements, these ancient plants have so much to offer!

Ambler Arboretum – Horticulture Hike (Ambler, PA)

Horticulture hikes are horticulture intensive tours with Arboretum Director Kathy Salisbury and Tyler School of Art and Architecture Greenhouse Education and Research Complex Manager Benjamin Snyder. A theme will be chosen each month. Participants will explore plant identification, use and culture, and more. Think scientific names, distinctive traits, phenology, seasonal interest, distinguishing look alike plants and practicing using various resources for identification.

Cherished for their exquisite beauty and delightfully distinct variations, chrysanthemums take center stage this season—and for very good reason. Complex by nature, chrysanthemums are divided into 13 classifications, each representing a distinct flower form, from the tiny pompon to the great irregular incurve—and all on full, radiant display.

Ladew Topiary Gardens – Art Exhibit (Monkton, MD)

This exhibit is titled, “Totems: A Cosmic Conversation,” and will be on display until 10/31/23. The juxtaposition of Sam’s distinctive work in Ladew’s natural setting creates a contrast of soft and hard features that highlight the best of both. His colorful totems rising out of our Meadow are dynamic features telling a lyrical story. Sam’s work involves cultural and personal histories and explores the theme of human relationships.
